Berkshire has impeccable Royal credentials in the form of Windsor Castle, Windsor Great Park and Ascot Racecourse. It is increasingly favoured by people leaving London to seek a more relaxed, less urban lifestyle, still within easy reach of the capital.
Reading is a major centre for work and leisure, Windsor for history, shopping and eating out, both of which are home to the beautiful River Thames. On a smaller scale, there are dozens of picturesque villages, many with enchanting riverside settings. The river Kennet, and Kennet and Avon Canal also offer opportunities for relaxation, whether you want to stroll the waterside or hire a boat.
Wilder open spaces include the Berkshire Downs, North Wessex Downs and Swinley Forest, all perfect for walks, family outings and cycling.
More sophisticated pursuits include golf in Sunningdale and racing at Ascot. Berkshire is also something of a foodie hotspot. The village of Bray has three Michelin starred restaurants, The Fat Duck, The Waterside Inn and The Hind’s Head, and Shinfield has a Michelin star restaurant, L’Ortolan.
